There has never been a more exciting time to be preparing for a new semester at JMU Journalism, and induction week is finally here.
Our outstanding modern facilities are in place at the new £37.6million LJMU Redmonds Building in Clarence Street, and while there are bound to be some nerves for the freshers, their university journey is starting in the ideal location. Class of 2011 graduate Jonathan Birchall has some excellent advice for new starters in his blog.
Starbucks café officially opened on the ground floor of Redmonds Building on Friday with a charity benefit in memory of Eddie Fitzpatrick, who sadly died over the summer. JMU Journalism veterans from the Edge Lane era will fondly remember Eddie as the cheerful face behind the student coffee bar counter, and the proceeds from the Starbucks opening will be donated to the Macmillan Nurses cancer charity.
Across Redmonds, newsrooms and lecture theatres are ready to welcome the new recruits and returning students, with the induction week schedule listed below, plus some very important information for all final year (Level 6) students about a packed Advanced Journalism Practice programme in the first week of teaching.
Head of JMU Journalism, Professor Chris Frost, said: “As with any new building, there will inevitably be some occasional confusion early on, so my advice to all students is to plan on arriving a bit early for your first sessions.
“We are lucky in the sense that all of our undergraduate or MA classes, workshops and lectures will either be on the ground floor or basement of the Redmonds Building, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find your way round. However, everyone should note that Friday’s induction activities for all students will be held in the LJMU John Foster Building, which is just around the corner on Mount Pleasant.
“All of the Journalism staff members are really looking forward to meeting our new students, and reacquainting ourselves with some familiar faces.”
