An email error led to hundreds of University of Liverpool students receiving the wrong exam results today, forcing its Vice Chancellor to apologise for the “nightmare” mistake.
The Russell Group university has urged students not to discuss results which were meant to be sent to others, urging: “Please would you respect your fellow students’ privacy and not share any results other than your own.”
The university has promised that anxious undergraduates will receive the “correct results later today”, while Vice Chancellor Sir Howard Newby told BBC Radio Merseyside: “We really are upset. This is every VC’s nightmare. We can only apologise and put it right.”
An email statement by the University of Liverpool reads: “As you know, a technical problem with Exam Results emails this morning has resulted in some students receiving the wrong email. As soon as the University identified the problem, the process of issuing emails with exam results was stopped and so the majority of students have not yet received any email.
“The University sincerely regrets this error and is doing all it can to ensure that students receive the correct results as quickly as possible. In the meantime, all erroneous messages have been deleted from students’ email accounts.”
Social media sites Twitter and Facebook were buzzing with messages from people stating they had received the wrong grades, with Daniel Bradley tweeting: “So Uni of Liverpool decided to send me a 2nd year Vet’s results, instead of my own. I feel like this is how great rom-coms start.”
Another student, Tom Cochrane, tweeted: “Confused as to how an establishment like Uni of Liverpool can mess up this much! I just want my exam results!!”
