Ten final year Journalism and Sports Journalism students have been paired with industry mentors as part of an exciting collaboration with the John Schofield Trust.
It’s the second year the Journalism department has been involved with the scheme. It sees students given mentors already working in the industry to help guide and support them over a 12 month period before they graduate and take their first steps towards breaking into the industry.
This year’s mentors include the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire, the Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, Claire Hodgson, along with Anthony Joseph and Harriet Prior from Sky Sports.
Trust director, Howard Littler, said: “We’re delighted at the continuation of the partnership with LJMU to mentor final year journalism students.
“Individual mentoring can unlock opportunities that were not previously available, and give vital support and confidence to new journalists finding their feet in a tough sector. I always enjoy working with LJMU students who bring a particular passion and brilliance to their work.”
Journalism course leader, Frances Yeoman, added: “LJMU Journalism’s partnership with the John Schofield Trust, which has long campaigned for more equality of opportunity in the media, fits perfectly with our wider efforts to put equality and diversity at the heart of our department.
“We are really excited to see how this year’s student fellows develop with the help of their professional mentors, who have kindly given their time and expertise because they recognise that a journalism industry that is open to all is in everyone’s best interests.”
