Liverpool has been beaten to the World Santa Challenge record title by rival city Las Vegas which held its annual Great Santa Run on Saturday.
A total of 11,221 Santas ran in the ninth annual Vegas event in support of charity, Opportunity Village, eclipsing Liverpool’s number of 10,299 earlier this month.
A delegation from Liverpool traveled to Las Vegas to congratulate their American counterparts, while country singer Shania Twain was the star guest for the fun run.
She tweeted after the event: “Had a great time today, serving as the Grand Marshall to the Las Vegas Great Santa Run!”
Despite failing to claim the world record title, Liverpool outdid its 2012 total of 8,500 entries, as well as surpassing last year’s winning Las Vegas total of 9,670, and the city’s Santa Dash remains the largest event of its kind to be held in the UK.
Speaking after last week’s run, race director, Alan Rothwell, told JMU Journalism: “I’m extremely proud of the Santa Dash and all that it has achieved over the years and looking ahead to 2014 when it will be the official 10th anniversary – the event will once again be bigger and better!”
