Kate graduated with a 2:1 in Economic History from the University of Liverpool before taking a Postgraduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism at City University, London.
She became a newspaper reporter and district news editor for what was then United Newspapers before moving into newspaper production at the Liverpool Daily Post, where she was a sub-editor and columnist.
She began teaching in 1997 and now combines lecturing with a career as a freelance journalist.
Kate has freelanced for a number of magazines and newspapers, including the Daily Mail, and is a media consultant and media trainer, advising a variety of organisations in the private and public sector. She is the NCTJ co-ordinator at JMU and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
She is also one of the Editorial Directors of JMU Journalism: Liverpool Life.
