LJMU has premiered its first documentary recording the progress of its student racing team.
The programme, Formula Student, gives students the chance to join a team designing, building, and racing a single seat car.
Liverpool John Moores University’s team, now racing into its fifth consecutive year, has participated in events in Silverstone and Barcelona.
This year’s team has set itself apart from previous years with the integration of various faculties at the university
Rhian Griffith, team manager, said: “We’re expected to act like a professional business and a professional race team, so we need other disciplines to help us.
“We just think LJMU Racing team should be something the whole university is proud of, not just the engineering team.”
As an extra-curricular activity, the team is open to students from around the university, not just those taking engineering.
The film, which was done to give people a better idea of what the team does, shows the build, the testing, and the competitions the JMU team has entered. The screening, Griffith said, was there to help drum up support from both the team’s sponsors as well as people within the university.
The documentary itself, directed and produced by LJMU Media student Katerina Tsoncheva, was created to give the team a sense of legacy. With the constant progression of members joining and graduating, Tsoncheva wanted to document the experience as both a lesson for new students and a collection of memories for departing team members.
Tsoncheva said: “I really hope next year that more people will be joining us, it’s really something that no-one should miss out on.”
