Liverpool is to celebrate Cunard’s 175th birthday by welcoming all three of the company’s Queen cruise liners to its port.
The Queen Mary 2 will arrive at the Liverpool Cruise Terminal on 24th May 2015, while the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria will arrive the following day. Celebrations will also take place in New York and Sydney.
Onlookers will have a chance to view all three ships together in front of the Three Graces at the Pier Head before the Queen Mary 2 departs first.
Joe Anderson, Mayor of Liverpool, told the Echo: “To have the three Cunard Queens back in their spiritual home on our beautiful waterfront will be nothing short of majestic. This will be an unmissable spectacle which will attract worldwide attention and draw massive crowds.”
The mayor also hinted that the celebrations could include the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra performing on the roof of the Cunard building. He said: “These are just my ideas at present, but that’s the type of thing we’re looking at.”
The people of Liverpool tweeted their enthusiasm for the big event. @1Mikeyboyd wrote: “Spectacular and good for Liverpool.” @stuwystv tweeted: “Already looking forward to 25th May when the three Queens will be together on the Mersey!”
