A leading anti-trafficking charity, Childreach International, came to Liverpool this week to present the film ‘SOLD’, which is focused on educating people about the global issue.
The film, entitled ‘SOLD: The Movie’, was shown on Tuesday night at the International Slavery Museum at the Albert Dock.
It tells the story of Lakshmi, a 13-year old girl from Nepal, who is brutally trafficked to India.
However, her story is unfortunately not unique as it is thought that an average of around 30-50 girls are trafficked from Nepal every day.
Official figures from ‘Stop the Traffik’ show that approximately 600,000 women, men and children are taken without consent across international borders on a yearly basis.
The film is part of the Childreach International’s ‘Taught not Trafficked’ campaign, which aims to help the children of Nepal and prevent them from the risks of being taken. Education plays a huge part in the campaign, namely by helping children to remain in school until they are least 16, and looking at the root causes of the problem.
The movie also features well-known names, with Gillian Anderson appearing and actor Emma Thompson serving as executive producer.

The film inspires its audience to take direct action and stand against this ever-growing problem. The action can be small and simple, with ideas such as fundraising in the community being encouraged.
The screening at the International Slavery Museum was followed by a panel talk on issues surrounding trafficking, and how we can all try to eradicate this issue going forward in the 21st Century. The panel consisted of Dr Alex Balch of the Centre of International Slavery, Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner Jayne Kennedy, and Phil Clayton from City Hearts.
There will also be further showings in various cities across the country, including Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham and Sheffield.
