Liverpool is busy celebrating its fourth Fashion Week as the event hosts more than 50 catwalk shows in six days to help celebrate 50 years of Beatles’ music.
Opening night guests at Leo Casino were greeted by four giant puppets of The Beatles, and eccentric X Factor contestant Goldie Cheung from last year’s series, as 80s singer and Simon Cowell’s muse Sinitta opened the show.
Sinitta, along with girls on the catwalk sported what has infamously become known as the ‘Liverpool look’ which earlier this year director Amanda Moss banned from Fashion Week, along with the Desperate Scousewives who helped make it popular.
The girls wore ‘Scousebrows’, rollers in their hair and were in their pyjamas holding cigarettes. As Sinitta said: “This is not what Liverpool fashion week is about.”
Then the music began and a quote from John Lennon was played over the speakers as the first designs graced the catwalk. “Those of you in the cheaper seats clap your hands the rest of you just rattle your jewellery.”
Judging from the opening night early parades, black and gold are definitely the top colours for the winter trend and anything that sparkles, goes. ‘Pretty Little Thing’ showed that the gothic look is still very much in style, with leather, studs, sheer fabric and crosses.
Pearl Boutiques designs showed detail is everything with this designer, from pearl necklines and lace sleeves. Their designs were very much “dare to bare” as models wore leather jackets with their bras on show, hot pants and plunging necklines. One particular red floor-length dress stole the show.
There was a short performance by local talent Poisonous Twin, who made it through to the judges houses in Las Vegas of this year’s X Factor, singing covers of Lady Gaga and Lana del Ray.
But the night belonged to local fashion, and the broad range of styles on offer during an excellent night proved that there is so much more to Liverpool style than the stereotypes would have you believe.
