Six LJMU students got the experience of a lifetime when they interviewed music legend Miley Cyrus for the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show.
JMU Journalism students Rosie Robinson, Darcy Davis, Phoebe Ross and Tom Pratten joined two other members of JMSU’s Moores Student Radio Society as they took part in BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool.
The students got to meet Radio 1 host and former student radio presenter, Greg James, and were given a tour around the broadcasting equipment.
Unbeknown to them, BBC Radio 1 had set up an interview with Miley Cyrus, ahead of her releasing her new music this month. It was only when DJ Greg started talking to her live on the screen did they realise that this wasn’t a prerecorded video.

Journalism undergraduate Tom said: “As Greg was showing us all the equipment, he pointed us to the screen, where a Zoom call was being broadcast with none other than Miley Cyrus.
“It turns out Greg had a trick up his sleeve and wanted to surprise us all with the A-list pop star, with over 212 million followers, which worked, with Phoebe and Darcy breaking to tears! We were being recorded for Greg James’ Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 1– wow.”
Moores Student Radio Society station manager, Jack Bostock, said: “Finding ourselves interviewing Miley Cyrus was a huge surprise. We had absolutely no idea. It was really exciting and I think a few of us let our inner child out when we found ourselves talking to Hannah Montana.”
Miley told the students: “We’ve all grown up together, so there’s a little bit of, like, an emotional attachment and connection between me when I get to meet people, even though now it’s virtually.
“It’s a unique introduction because I think all of us really feel like we’ve kind of already connected and know each other in some way.”
Interviewing a pop icon was only part of the experience as Radio 1 gave the Moores Student Radio Society members guest passes to the Big Weekend, where they were able to cover the event for their station and social channels.
The Big Weekend lineup featured Liverpudlian band, The Wombats, who the radio station had also interviewed in the week running up to the festival.
