Powerful recreations of the difficulties faced by families during World War II were on display as Alder Hey Children’s Hospital charity held a themed fundraiser.
The ‘Bunk In The Bunker’ night was held at the Western Approaches HQ Museum on Saturday night into Sunday morning and was a stay-over event where the adults and children got to experience what it would have been like throughout the war.
It included challenges such as ‘Cracking Morse Code’, a treasure hunt and an escape room. If that wasn’t enough, there was also live music, games and films for adults and children alike.
Adam Dixon, the community fundraiser for Alder Hey, told JMU Journalism: “When we did the site visit, we thought [of having] a sponsored sleepover because we don’t have anything like that in our event calendar. This is the first time that we are doing it so it’s really exciting.”

Alder Hey Childrens Charity held a WW2 inspired sleepover last night, which included challenges, live music and films. Both adults and children were encouraged to attend, and for those who couldn’t make it, let’s hope they do it again next year! @AlderHey pic.twitter.com/NrU51x5rrD

Although it was originally going to be a corporate team building exercise, it was later turned into a family activity where both adults and children could take part.
Mr Dixon added: “As we are a charity we want to raise as much money as possible and hopefully this event will raise over £10,000 for us. We do hope it will be an annual event. It’s an amazing space and any money that the Western Approaches Museum raises goes straight back into the museum.”
Since April 2013 events like these have enabled the charity to raise over £43 million which ensures the hospital can afford medical equipment, its research campus and the day-to-running of the facility.
