Mayor’s Hope Fund to spread Christmas cheer

Mayor Joe Anderson has given his backing to a scheme that aims to help those in poverty with food donations.

The Mayor’s Hope Fund, which was formed in 2013, has launched an appeal to donate items to the less fortunate in Liverpool in time for Christmas.

The project, run by the Liverpool City Council, has placed food collection points in over 40 public buildings across the city.

Some can be found in Lifestyle Centres, Libraries, One Stop Shops and Liverpool Town Hall.

This is the third Christmas foodbank appeal that has been conducted by the council and through their efforts as well as the public’s contributions, they hope to assist those living in poverty.

The aim of the project is to ensure that underprivileged families in Liverpool will have food available to them during the holiday period.

The Mayor’s Hope Fund has recorded that 19,000 people used foodbanks in Liverpool between April in 2017 and March in 2018, with 36% of these donations feeding children.

Mayor Anderson told JMU Journalism: “Sadly, while so many look forward to Christmas we also know the period brings with it extra challenges for many families. This appeal will help make up food parcels for those in need in our city over the holiday season.

“We hope this year’s appeal will be the biggest yet, with donation boxes in more than 40 locations – from staff offices to public buildings including Central Library, the city centre’s One Stop Shop, Park Road Adult Learning Centre and Tuebrook and West Derby Children’s Centres.

“It’s a real source of pride that so many colleagues and council staff have stepped up to the plate to help, as they always do for great causes.”

Councillor Paul Brant, Cabinet Member for Health & Social Care, also expressed the importance of the scheme.

He told JMU Journalism: “The project is a valuable and much needed addition to the work which the foodbanks do in any event. It harnesses the public’s enthusiasm to go the extra mile at this time of year.”

The donations will be sent to Trussell Trust who will then send them to those in need.
