Red Rum, The Beatles, the Mersey ferries and a treasure hunt were just some of the attractions and activities this year’s intake of JMU Journalism students experienced during induction week.
The packed programme introduced the freshers to their new home for the next three years, and gave them a taster of what life as a student journalist will be like.
First up was a warm welcome from the journalism staff at an event held in the historic surroundings of Liverpool Medical Institution, one of the city’s hidden architectural gems.
Then it was off to explore city landmarks using Twitter to record their findings as they took part in a Treasure Hunt – some students evidently finding the task more relaxing than others!
The following day saw one group of students take a ferry ‘cross the Mersey before alighting at Albert Dock to enjoy the Beatles Story Experience.
Meanwhile, Sports Journalism students had the chance to follow in the hoof steps of Grand National winners when they visited Aintree.

The students visited the media centre, the jockeys’ changing room, the main stand and the parade ring as they got a look behind the scenes at the course which hosts the world’s greatest horse race.
Some even braved the torrential rain to pay their respects at the grave of the National’s most famous winner, Red Rum.
Guy Hodgson, programme leader for Sports Journalism, said: “Aintree is among Britain’s most famous sporting venues so the chance to go there was a wonderful opportunity for our Level 4 students. It was wet and virtually empty, but you could still sense the atmosphere of Grand National Saturday.
“What a memorable way for students to start their three years in Liverpool.”
Journalism programme leader Jackie Newton added: “It’s always a pleasure to see so many new faces ready to start their journalism journey with us. We’re delighted so many students share our interest in such a fascinating subject – and they’ve wisely chosen to study it in what we believe is the greatest city in the world!
“Whether their focus is news, sport, the arts or politics, we’re here to help them shine academically and professionally.”
