A law lecturer at the University of Liverpool has been announced as a finalist for the English Woman of the Year Award 2018 for outstanding achievement to medicine.
Dr Amel Alghrani is one of 10 finalists up for the award, with the ceremony set to take place in October at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole.
Speaking to JMU Journalism, the University of Liverpool graduate said: “I was both surprised and thrilled to be nominated. As one constantly strives to carve out a life worth value, it is reaffirming to know that someone out there values the work and service you are offering.”
After graduating in 2002 with a Bachelor of Laws, Amel received a £10,000 scholarship which gave her the chance in 2003 to begin training to become a barrister.
Born in Liverpool, the 35-year-old added: “After briefly working at the General Medical Council, I decided to focus on becoming an academic lawyer and undertook a Masters in Healthcare Ethics and Law. This was achieved in 2004.
“Still academically curious, I embarked upon undertaking a doctorate in Law. I was awarded my PhD in 2008, whilst also working full time as an academic lawyer. Success is doing what you love and finding someone to pay you to do what you love. Right now and whatever the outcome of the award, I feel nourished by the career I have.”
Having previously won Lecturer of the Year in 2015, Dr Alghrani believes her success is down to hard work: “I was determined to make something of my education as growing up was tough and I had deep-seated aspirations to try and use my education to help others.”
This year marks the 10-year anniversary since she was awarded her PhD, something along with her recent nomination that she hopes will inspire her the people she teaches: “I always tell my students that they have untold greatness within, and if I can do it, they can do it.”
