Plans for a new International College (LIC) by the University of Liverpool have received approval, making it the first development with permission to build a new structure in the city’s Knowledge Quarter.
The new LIC ‘live-learn’ facility is set to open in January 2019 and will recruit more than 800 international students for entry into the university’s degree programmes each year, with courses in academic skills, key subject knowledge and English language.
Leelee Yates, Director of LIC, said: “We are delighted the plans for our own purpose-built facility have been approved.
“With the Knowledge Quarter becoming established as a world-leading hub for innovation, our new location will offer our students exciting opportunities and convenient access to university facilities.”
LIC, which operates through a partnership between the University and Kaplan, submitted plans in 2016 to develop a new ‘live-learn’ facility in the Knowledge Quarter where Grove Street intersects Smithdown Lane.
Additionally, the establishment will provide 259 bedrooms for international students with a house café, knowledge hub, study booths, and a social area.
Linda Cowan, managing director, Kaplan International Pathways, said: “As we celebrate 10 years of successful partnership with the University of Liverpool, recently extended for another 15 years, this is a fitting time to receive this good news.”
This Knowledge Quarter district was created to bring together the city’s key partners to collaborate in a creative environment and to help close the economic gap with London.
