Dave has been a journalist for more than 30 years, having worked in local and national newspapers, magazines, public relations and digital media. He began his career at the Stockport Express Advertiser and went on to spend ten years at the Bolton Evening News as a senior reporter.
He was a regional public relations officer at a charity and worked in the press office at two local authorities before embarking on a freelance career writing news and features for a ranged of newspapers, the Big Issue in the North and a North West- based radical arts magazine. He also covered high profile cases at Manchester Crown Court and launched a hyperlocal website for South Manchester, The Wythenshawe Reporter, which he continues to edit.
Dave is also a former president of the National Union of Journalists, and has been involved in campaigns to support local journalism and defend media freedom, addressing gatherings of journalists across Europe.
He has been teaching journalism since 2007, specialising in media law, politics and digital journalism and is currently researching the impact of digital technology on newspapers and the role of hyperlocal news sites in areas of social deprivation.
