British astronaut Major Tim Peake has tweeted a spectacular image of Merseyside’s coastline from the International Space Station.
The picture has made waves on social media outlet Twitter and has been shared and liked thousands of times.
The Wirral’s green spaces and the sandy bays of the River Dee and Mersey estuaries can be seen clearly, as well as snow on the tops of the Welsh mountains.
Major Peake, who is the first British astronaut on the ISS, was launched into space in December. His mission, entitled ‘Principia’, will use the unique environment of space to run experiments, as well as try out new technologies for future human exploration missions.
The astronaut made contact with the World Museum Liverpool last month, as 300 children from all over the country gathered for a special Q&A. This was the only UK venue to have hosted an educational in-flight call with an astronaut.
Peake impressed the pupils with his scientific experiments and his interesting insight into how his mission will help making earth a healthier place.
Since Tim embarked on his mission, the astronaut has completed two space walks and regularly tweets about his experiences, as the father-of-two orbits the planet.
This latest image follows on from when Canadian astronaut, Commander Chris Hadfield, photographed Liverpool and the Wirral at night during his five-month mission on the International Space Station in 2013.
