One of the most filmed cities in the UK plans to show off its past projects in a new exhibition.
The Museum of Liverpool will display the ‘Reel Stories’ exhibition from Friday March 11th until January next year, with film posters, movie props and paraphernalia dating all the way back to the 1950s.
The city’s diverse backdrops and buildings have been used to portray scenes of London, New York and other iconic locations across the world for the past 60 years. Occasionally Liverpool is even used to trick the audience into playing more than one city in the same movie.
Amongst the famous films with scenes shot in Liverpool are Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Fast and Furious and Sherlock Holmes.
The most recent claim to fame for Liverpool is J K Rowling’s ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ that had St George’s Hall gated off for filming last October.
According to Liverpool Film Office, the city has hosted over 6,000 productions since the office opened in 1989. The Film Office brings an estimated £20million into the city’s economy.
Councillor Wendy Simon, Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member responsible for the Film Office, said: “This is set to be a fascinating exhibition and will give a taste of the breadth of films in which Liverpool has taken a starring role.”
The aim of the exhibition is to display Liverpool’s ability to take on leading roles and to reminisce over the city’s cinematic history.
Councillor Simon continued: “Liverpool is one of the most-filmed cities in the UK thanks to the diverse locations on offer and the work of our dedicated Film Office team, whose knowledge of the city and willingness to go above and beyond, attracting film and TV productions time and time again.
“We’re pleased to have supported National Museums Liverpool with this showcase and think it’s a great insight into our silver screen success.”
