An arts and music event will take place this Saturday November 14th to raise funds for people seeking refuge in Liverpool.
The fundraiser gig will be held at The Baltic Triangle’s 24 Kitchen Street, and will see a range of local artists take to the stage, including Science of the Lamps, Mersey Wylie, The Soul Rays and Lotharios.
This will also accompany a day of creative events to be announced soon, which will feature a variety of workshops, arts and music, activities and community outreach from local refugee support agencies to give attendees advice on what they can do to help the migrant crisis.
Liverpool Welcomes is an organisation set up specifically to fundraise for refugee services in the city. Not only have they organised the event to raise money, they aim to support local charities who are able to build bridges and support networks for anyone across Merseyside.
The money raised through this event will go towards the charities Merseyside Refugee Support Network and MSF Doctors Without Borders, a private and international association that provides assistance to populations in distress.
Holly de Sylva, Communications Operator for the occasion, said the refugee crisis is the biggest worldwide catastrophe since the Second World War.
She told JMU Journalism: “Refugees and asylum seekers in Britain receive around £36 a week to cover bills, food, travel – everything – and they aren’t allowed to work. These are the most vulnerable people in our society and the government isn’t helping them.
“Refugee services in Liverpool have been working tremendously hard for years. Most are underfunded and they need our support. Currently the non-government funded refugee service, Asylum, assign Merseyside support around 300 destitute asylum seekers a week.”
As well as fundraising on Saturday, Liverpool Welcomes is inviting people to donate or volunteer with local charities throughout the year.
Tickets to the music event are £5 and are available from Liverpool Welcomes website or on Facebook. Asylum seekers and refugees have free entry.
