Mobster movie ‘Goodfellas’ will bring an edgy and dark dimension to the occasion as it forms the centrepiece of a new themed cult film night in the city.
The Robert de Niro and Joe Pesci classic will be the first of many films to be shown at the recently opened Buyers Club, as part of Independent Liverpool’s big screen initiative.
Adding to the thriving bar and restaurant scene on Hope Street and Hardman Street, what was once The Picket will be turned into its very own Copacabana Club for the evening.
The sold-out event will launch with the iconic gangster film next Tuesday November 10th at 7pm. At £25 a ticket, the price includes admission to the screening as well as themed food and drink.
Oliver Press, co-founder of Independent Liverpool, explained the origin of the event to JMU Journalism: “Film, food and cocktails are definitely our three favourite things in life, so we thought it would be fun to start our own bi-weekly cult film night that brings the three together in an experiential way.”
The Buyers Club restaurant is run by the chefs behind Secret Diners Club, who will be serving up ‘Meatballs Just Like Mama Used to Make in Vinnie’s Special Sauce’ and ‘Postman’s Margarita Pizza’.
Accompanying the food will be Italian red wine and a cocktail named ‘I Always Wanted To Be a Gangster’.
There has been a positive response on social media so far, with people suggesting films for upcoming nights and the guys from Independent Liverpool hope to show them all.
Dan Cameron, who will be attending the event, said: “I’ve heard great things about the new venue and going to see such a great film as a first visit seems a pretty spot on idea. Independent Liverpool know the score when it comes to sorting out cool new events like this.”
Ideas are still in the pipeline for the second screening.
Talking of options, Oliver said: “Maybe a silent film with a live music accompaniment, or a foreign film, or maybe even something ridiculous like Space Jam. Whatever film we decide on it will be a completely different experience from the Goodfellas night.”
