A Liverpool restaurant is celebrating after being named as serving up the nation’s favourite breakfast for a second year running.
The Tavern Company in the Penny Lane area of Smithdown Road, Wavertree, has been named ‘the people’s choice’, scoring over 2,000 public votes and beating hundreds of other venues across the UK.
The award-winning dish is a full-English fry-up consisting of two specialist sausages, bacon, grilled tomato, black pudding, mushrooms. baked beans and toast.
And the breakfast also comes with bottomless tea or coffee, with a member of staff always on hand to make sure customers are topped up with the hot drinks.
The suburban independent, which celebrates its 25th birthday this year, employs 55 staff and has doubled its cover capacity to 200 in recent times, making it one of the most successful non-chain outlets in the city.
Company owner Keith Gurney told JMU Journalism: “I’m delighted to win this award for the second year running by the vote of the British public.
“It all started last year when one of the local newscasters for a city radio station told me that they want to put my breakfast forward for this award
“We developed from modest beginnings since I’ve moved over from the USA. I’m originally from Cleveland but I was dragged up in New Orleans
“The sausages are made up of my own recipe, and the bread for the toast is freshly baked the night before. But I think it’s the bottomless tea and coffee and good service we provide that makes people keep coming back.”
The awards take place as part of Breakfast Week, which aims to emphasise the importance of eating breakfast every morning.
It runs from January 25th to 31st, and is a national campaign organised on behalf of UK cereal farmers and producers to celebrate the importance of a morning meal.
