Three Merseyside schools have been named among some of the best performing secondaries in the country.
Liverpool’s Bluecoat achieved fourth best in the North West region in the Sunday Times Parent Power list which was released yesterday. West Kirby Grammar School and Wirral Grammar School of Girls came fifth and seventh in the prestigious rankings.
The Parent Power list assesses the performance of the top 2,000 state and independent schools and they are placed in order according to the percentage of pupils achieving A grade GCSEs and A* to B grades at A-level.
Alison Duffy, Headteacher of West Kirby Grammar School, told JMU Journalism: “We are extremely proud and delighted that our ranking is so high and amongst the best in the North West. It is a recognition of the hard work and dedication of staff and students alike.”
Mrs Duffy praised the school ethos where students are encouraged to ‘reach for the stars’ and believes “outstanding teaching, excellent relationships between teachers and students and a huge range of enrichment activities” are amongst the many reasons as to why the school is enjoying continued success.
It was found that 98% of students at The Bluecoat school have achieved five or more A* to C grades over the last five years. This year, 82% of GCSE entrants achieved A* and A grades with over 74% achieving A* to B grades at A Level.
The Bluecoat, West Kirby Grammar School and Wirral Grammar School for Girls finished 54th, 72nd and 80th in the national rankings.
Other Merseyside schools which made it into the national paper’s top 200 include Upton Hall School FCJ in Wirral, which reached 146th and Wirral Grammar School for Boys in Bebington at 182.
Birkenhead School in Wirral was in the top 10 of independent North West secondary schools.
