A 15-year-old girl has died after being struck by a train on the Wirral this morning.
The incident happened on the line between Port Sunlight and Hooton train station at around 10:30am. British Transport Police (BTP) have confirmed that the young girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesperson for BTP said in a statement: “Our officers were called to Port Sunlight railway station at around 10:30am following reports of a person struck by a train.
“Colleagues from Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service also attended. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
The accident triggered delays of up to 60 minutes between Chester, Ellesmere Port and Birkenhead Central, however rail replacement bus services were put in place and some rail services are now getting back to normal.
A Merseyrail spokeswoman told JMU Journalism: “It’s terribly sad, it is what we are calling non-suspicious circumstances because nobody else was involved.
“We have put replacements in place which has enabled people to get where they want to go. There are still some cancelations and delayed trains however we have some services getting through Port Sunlight.”
There is no definitive time of how long disruption to rail services will last, however Merseyrail has estimated normal services will resume this afternoon.
