Staff at a Liverpool John Moores University library helped to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support by shaving their hair off.
Hoping to do their bit, three members of staff at LJMU’s Aldham Robarts library decided to raise money in an eye-catching way and had their hair shaved off in front of around 100 people.
Ann Keely, Jill Brennan and Frank Halligan have raised more than £1,000 so far on their ‘Just Giving’ page as part of the Macmillan Coffee Morning.
Library assistant Jill Brennan, 48, encouraged her colleagues to get involved and they were happy to join her and support the charity event.
Jill told JMU Journalism: “I did initially come up with the idea when Macmillan were advertising the coffee morning on the television and I did think, ‘oh we could do that at work’.
“Then I thought ‘what’s something else we could do to make more money?’ and I got to thinking of my friend when she lost her hair, so I decided to shave my hair off, which is something I could do.”
Macmillan Cancer Support helps to improve the lives of those affected by the disease and provide practical, financial and medical support in order to do so.
Ms Keely grew close to the cause after some of her family members suffered from cancer and saw it as an opportunity to give back. She said: “I think it’s just made me realise just what people who have cancer go through.
“I think with cancer it’s very important [to raise awareness] because everybody knows somebody who’s suffered with cancer and it’s just one of those horrible diseases that there’s no cure for.”
Team Leader, Chris Burs, 49, said: “I know the girls raised quite a substantial amount but it was quite touching really, to see the girls go through that.
“I was really anxious for them as well, and quite emotional looking at them because I know how much it meant to them and for any girl losing her hair. I’m just in awe, to be perfectly honest with you.”
