Proposed plans for regeneration costing £1.5 billion have been unveiled by Liverpool Mayor, Joe Anderson.
Various projects, expected to bring 12,000 construction jobs to the city, include a radical development of Mount Pleasant in the shadow of the LJMU Redmonds, where the car park and 051 Club will make way for new landmark buildings.
Lime Street will be home to a new TV and music venue, hotel, cinema, restaurants and shops, as well as accommodation for mature students.
Mayor Anderson said: “Lime Street has been an area which was forgotten for far too long. It is one of the first things visitors to our city see when they step off the train and I am committed to transforming this into the gateway our world-class city deserves.”
The plans also include an Olympic-sized ice rink at King’s Dock along with an extreme sports complex, restaurants and family homes.
Along with the initial construction posts provided by the schemes, it is expected that there will be 4,000 permanent jobs brought to the city, as well as the safeguarding of a further 3,000 as a result.
Mayor Anderson added: “These schemes demonstrate there is a vibrant, exciting future ahead for Liverpool. The projects we are developing for King’s Dock and Lime Street will make the city an even greater place to live, work and invest.
“Crucially though, they will bring thousands of jobs into the city which will ensure we have a sustainable future. I promised our best days are ahead of us, and these key projects are evidence of some of the things we have planned for the future.”
The new plans are currently in the initial development stages; the council expects firmer plans to emerge towards the end of this year or the beginning of next year, when planning applications have been submitted.
A regeneration update was also presented to the council about Project Jennifer, on Great Homer Street, which started last month, while phase two of the Edge Lane Retail Park will begin in three weeks’ time.
