Liverpool is the third best city in the world to visit in 2014, according to travel experts Rough Guides.
The travel content provider placed Liverpool in the top three for places to visit this year and picked out the Baltic Triangle region of the city as a particular highlight.
Neil McQuillian, editor of Rough Guides, told JMU Journalism: “Projects such as Liverpool One and Mann Island gave the city renewed sheen. But for 2014 it’s the Baltic Triangle, a grittier, more grass-roots sort of development we’re most excited about.”
He added: “The initiative has reinvigorated an atmospheric but hardly visited patch of crumbling warehouses and edgy waterfront, with venues such as Haus, Camp and Furnace, the Baltic Bakehouse and Kitchen Street Pop Up redefining the city centre’s boundaries.”
The announcement yesterday that the Sea Odyssey giants will be returning to the city later this year, along with the reopening of the Everyman theatre in March, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Festival in May and a newly buzzing cruise terminal look set to make 2014 an exciting year for the City of Liverpool.
Annual features, meanwhile, include the Grand National at Aintree, Chinese New Year and the Merseyside derby.
Speaking of the clash between the two city rivals, Mr McQuillian said: “Liverpool and Everton’s resurgence should guarantee a buzz the city hasn’t known for years.”
Brazil’s Carnaval capital Rio claimed top spot ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Sarajevo while Glasgow was the only other entry from the UK in the top ten at number nine.
