Some of the world’s top general knowledge experts will descend on the city as the European Quizzing Championship will be held in Liverpool this week.
The city was chosen by the managing director of the International Quizzing Association (IQA), Jane Allen, and the Metropolitan Cathedral has been selected as the venue for the tenth annual contest.
Quiz masters such as Paul Shina from ITV’s The Chase, and Kevin Ashman from BBC’s Eggheads will be joining the event, as well as Ian Bayley, who is the former winner of Radio 4’s Brain of Britain and Mastermind in 2010 and 2011.
The competition this year is set to be the biggest in a decade, as organisers are aiming to beat the record set in 2011 of 179 contestants. So far 198 people have registered, representing 23 nations from across the globe.
Jane Allen, managing director of IQA told the Echo that someone from Australia will be competing, adding: “There are also three coming from America and one from India. But they can’t be crowned champion as it is the European Championships.”
The championships come in four parts, where pairs, nations and aspirational teams compete for a cup title. The national team final is open to the public for free, where two teams will go head-to-head at 2pm on Sunday.
Eight Merseyside Quiz League players are taking part, including Egghead Pat Gibson.
The European Quizzing Championship will take place at noon on Friday.
