Liverpool Town Hall was given a pink make-over today in support of breast cancer awareness.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Lord Mayor Gary Millar hosted an event to raise money for one of his nominated charities, The Linda McCartney Centre – the cancer clinic at The Royal Liverpool University hospital.
The Lord Mayor pledged to raise as much money as he could for charity during his 12-month reign and he told JMU Journalism: “Today is an opportunity to raise funds for The Linda McCartney Centre but also about opening the doors of the Town Hall and inviting people in and giving them a chance to find out information and to educate themselves about where to go for help or advice about cancer.”
A pink carpet was laid in the entrance to the Town Hall and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service brought along a pink fire engine, which attracted the attention of passers-by as it parked up outside.
As part of the event there were free health checks available and members of NHS services were on hand to give advice.
Debbie Doherty, manager of the awareness and early detection service, told JMU Journalism: “Today is all about breast cancer awareness but we also want to promote the awareness of other cancers too. Our main aim is early detection. We’re here today testing blood pressure and calculating BMI because looking after your health and well being can help to prevent cancer.”
As well as health professionals the event saw other volunteers, including some who have previously battled cancer, dressed in pink feather boas and cowboy hats rattling fundraising buckets and selling tea and cupcakes.
