A Liverpool John Moores student has created the University’s very first English Society.
Cleo Chalk, a third year English and Creative Writing student, believes it is the perfect time to set up a society as English has risen several places up the University league tables.
The 20-year-old told JMU Journalism: “It’s a great way to help people meet other English Students and literature enthusiasts across the whole university. We wanted to encourage interaction between different years and modules. It also seems a great way to give studying English at LJMU a social element.”
As a literature enthusiast herself, Cleo has written a children’s story that came runner-up in the Munch Time Competition 2013 and runs her own blog, Literary Lethargy.
Since starting the society in October, she has had a great deal of interest. She said: “So far we’ve had a great response with loads of people from every year registering their interest and signing up to our Facebook and Twitter pages.”
The society will host a range of social events as well as discussion groups which Cleo hopes will enrich student’s learning.
Cleo has started her third and final year of her course but is not worried about taking on the extra work load of running a society. She told JMU Journalism: “Although it’s going to be a busy year, the chance to help run the LJMU English Society seems like too good an opportunity to miss!
“Luckily, much of what I’m planning will complement our studies so although it’s a big extra commitment, it will certainly be worth it.”
Upcoming events for the society include a Halloween screening of Tim Burton’s ‘Beetlejuice’ and a Christmas meal, plus discussion groups and social events in the New Year.
