Liverpool has been named best nightlife destination in the UK by the world’s largest travel website, Trip Advisor.
Liverpool topped the poll, with Manchester taking second place, and London third.
The city’s world-famous music heritage proved to be one of the reasons it came top, and the Cavern Club was one of the places specifically singled out for praise, along with the Royal Court Theatre.
Dave Jones, Director of Cavern City Tours, said: “The Cavern Club is the cradle of British Pop Music – it’s the very place where the Beatles’ musical identity was formed.
“We welcome visitors from across the globe keen to experience the unique appeal of the Cavern. The club plays a massive part in the city’s nightlife scene, and last year attracted 650,000 visitors wanting to hear that evocative Cavern sound.”
The poll was based on the average ratings Trip Advisor users gave each destination during 2011.
Emma Shaw, a spokesperson for Trip Advisor, said: “Liverpudlians should be thrilled their city has been crowned Britain’s best nightlife destination. The city boasts thriving live music and comedy scenes along with great clubs, bars and restaurants.”
Lorraine Rogers, Chief Executive of The Mersey Partnership (TMP), Tourist Board for Liverpool City Region, described Liverpool as: “A city that welcomes visitors and appeals to all ages and all budgets.”
She added: “Visitors have an unrivalled choice in an attractive and easy to walk waterfront setting – from traditional pubs to stylish cocktail bars; from contemporary fun venues to those steeped in history; they can watch a live band in one of our fantastic venues… or enjoy a show at our stunning arena and theatres; visit the UK’s highest restaurant or visit the clubs and bars in Ropewalks and Albert Dock.”
The Albert Dock, Liverpool Cathedral and the Walker Art Gallery were also highlighted by Trip Advisor users as key daytime attractions to visit.
