Two Wirral libraries help to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support at what was dubbed their annual ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’.
Wallasey Village Library and Bebington Central Library raised just over £700 for the Macmillan charity as part a mass coffee morning across the country.
Carl Loughlin-Ravenscroft, Library Manager at Wallasey, told JMU Journalism: “Everyone was really supportive to a charity which has touched many people who attended.
“The coffee morning was a great success with everyone enjoying the scones, muffins, fairy cakes, carrot cakes, fruit cakes and cookies.”
Friends of the Library, June Chadwick, Norma Coburn and Judith Holroyd, baked over 200 cakes for the Wallasey coffee morning, which raised £401 in total, while Bebington Central Library raised just over £300.
Macmillan provides practical, medical and financial support for people living with cancer and the event started in 1990 when a local fundraising committee decided to hold a coffee morning.
In 1991 the first National World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was organised with 2,600 people registering.

Manager of Bebington Library, Claire Oxley, told JMU Journalism: “The morning created a very lively atmosphere for a charity that touches people’s hearts.
“We are a keen community centre who wants to help out in any way possible.”
Library Service Advisor at Bebington, Maria Byrne said: “Some of the staff made cakes at home and did an excellent job of organising the event.
“Although the event only lasted for an hour and a half we raised just over £300 through donations and a raffle. The library staff would like to thank their customers for their continued support and generosity.”
The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum in Birkenhead also took part for the first time and held a competition for ‘The Best Lemon Drizzle Cake’.
The morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event to date and has raised over £75 million in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.
