Smithdown Road roadworks have finished two weeks ahead of schedule after a major revamp.
The work, which started last September and suffered earlier delays, has now been completed with a brand new carriageway which should ease congestion coming from south Liverpool.
The scheme has cost over £1m and was funded partly by Liverpool City Council and Scottish Power.
The Smithdown Road area is extremely popular with the students of Liverpool, who choose to live in Wavertree because of the cheap housing and easy transport links into the city centre.
Architecture student Dillan Solanki, who lives on Alderson Road, Wavertree, told JMU Journalism: “The roadworks really did need doing, but I’m in my final year now and some days I’ve had to leave the house earlier to make sure I’m on time for my lectures and not late. It hasn’t been ideal really”.
The work, which started in the middle of January, was scheduled to last until the 20th March but has now finished earlier than expected, which will be a welcome boost for local businesses.
Councillor Tim Moore, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “Smithdown Road is an important route, so it’s vital that the road surface is of a high quality.
“The new carriageway, which has been needed for a number of years, will bring major benefits to motorists, cyclists, residents and businesses for years to come.
“Our partnership with Scottish Power is great example of how we can work with the private sector to deliver improvements.
“We’ve worked really hard to keep disruption to a minimum, and it’s fantastic news that we have been able to reward local people and businesses for their patience by finishing the work ahead of schedule.
“I hope they will feel, when they see the brand new road, that the short-term delays have been worth it.”
