The development of a site in Croxteth – earmarked for an Amazon warehouse – is in doubt taking the possibility of a thousand local jobs.
The Department for Education (DfE) may be planning to reject Liverpool council’s request to allow the playing fields of the former Croxteth Comprehensive to be sold but the council is yet to receive official confirmation of the refusal.
Detailed discussions are still underway with the developers about the potential facility which could create over 1,000 jobs in East Liverpool.
Liverpool City Mayor, Joe Anderson was approached in mid-2012 by the developer and had identified the council-owned Stonebridge Cross site off the East Lancashire Road in Gilmoss as the preferred location for a major new facility.
Councillor for Croxteth Ward Peter Mitchell told JMU Journalism: “We’ve been working closely with Liverpool City Council to try and get the site for the potential end user, who is planning on bringing 500-1000 full time jobs to the area which is very important.
“Part of the site is the former playing fields of Croxteth comp and, as such, we need permission from the minister responsible for those playing fields.
“Unfortunately the Department for Education have not supported the application but we hope we can work with them to persuade them to support the application in the next couple of weeks.
“The football teams who play on these playing fields were supportive of the project and we’ve found them an alternative site which includes football pitches and changing rooms.”
