A memorial day is to be held for a Liverpool Hope University student who died in her sleep last year.
Charlotte Mayes, from Wigan, was found lifeless on her couch in September last year and it has since been revealed that she had an undiagnosed heart condition. The 19-year-old had just started her studies at university in Liverpool and dreamt of becoming a primary school teacher.
Charlotte was a perfectly healthy young woman who was said to not be a big drinker and never taken drugs.
A recent pathology report showed that she had a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, causing a thickening of the heart muscle forcing it to work harder to pump blood.
Charlotte had been feeling very tired in the weeks before her death, but did not go to the doctors as her mum advised her.
A memorial day will be held in her home town of Wigan on Sunday 24th March 2013.
Charlotte’s mum Michelle Roberts described her as the “perfect daughter”.
Memorial organiser Paul Critchley, who knew Charlotte well, said: “I am making this event as a tribute to Charlotte Mayes and will be making a donation to The British Heart Foundation. The Mayes family have had more than their share of heartache over the years as sadly Ian, Charlotte’s dad, passed away at a very young age.”
In a message on Facebook her friend Nikita said: “I lost one of the most important things you will have in life and that was my best friend, the one who all my memories are with. She was the most beautiful, sweetest, fun, crazy, kind, forgiving, inspirational, cheerful girl you could ever meet.
“I love you so much Charlotte and I will never ever, ever, forget you, you are always in my heart. Sleep tight little princess.”
Hope University Secretary Graham Donelan told JMU Journalism: “The University was saddened to learn of the death of Charlotte Mayes, who started studying at Liverpool Hope at the beginning of the academic year. Our prayers are with her family and friends.”
