A group of volunteers will be presented with the Liverpool City Shield as a farewell gesture ahead of their charity Arctic expedition next month.
The shield will be presented to them by The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Sharon Sullivan, which will in turn be given to the Lord Mayor of Honningsvag in Norway whilst the team members are on their journey.
The team of eight are taking part in the ‘Arctic Heroes Challenge’ and will head off next month on a 17-day expedition by car from the UK up through Europe to Norway. They hope to cross the Arctic Circle and reach the northernmost point of Europe at Nordkapp.
The group organised the exploration to raise money for the charity ‘Help for Heroes’ and have already surpassed their target by raising more than £25,000.
Two of those heavily involved in organising the trip, Ian Williams and Wayne Mosedale, will accept the shield from the Lord Mayor at Exchange Flags on Monday where they will also be collecting a new Jeep which is being given to them by Pentagon Jeep temporarily for the expedition.
Councillor Sharon Sullivan told JMU Journalism: “I think Help for Heroes is a very worthy cause and I wish the team the best of luck ahead of their challenge. I am delighted that I am able to present them with this shield to send them off to Norway. I am sure they will receive a fantastic welcome in Nordkapp.”
Once the team arrive at Nordkapp, only the Svalbard Islands will separate them from the North Pole, with temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius. The team are planning to camp at various points on their journey to the Arctic Circle.
