Liverpool-born writer Jonathan Harvey is returning to his home town with his acclaimed play ‘Beautiful Thing’.
The play is coming back to Liverpool after nearly a decade of being at the West End and is marking its 20th anniversary where it all began. The play tells the story of teenager Jamie and his relationship with classmate and neighbour Ste. With laugh-out loud humour throughout, it shows how the boys discover the music of Mama Cass from their next door neighbour Leah.
Beautiful Thing was turned into a film in 1996 and is returning to the stage later this year. Former Coronations Street star Suranne Jones, who has worked with Jonathan before, stars as Jamie’s mother and she is the latest in a long list of names that have featured in the play since it started.
Pippa Lea, Communications and PR manager from The Playhouse told JMU Journalism: “Jonathan wrote his very first play, The Cherry Blossom, through a writing competition for the Liverpool Playhouse Studio as a teenager.
“He then went on to national success with ‘Beautiful Thing’, followed by an award-winning TV writing career. In 2010, we premièred his first play for almost 10 years, ‘Canary’, at the Playhouse.”
Pippa added: “We are delighted to be able to programme ‘Beautiful Thing’ as part of our new Spring Summer 2013 season. Jonathan is a great friend of the theatres and we are proud to be a venue for the UK tour of this exciting new production of such a poignant and timeless play.”
Beautiful Thing will be at the Liverpool Playhouse from May 28th until June 1st next year. Tickets go on sale on November 26th.
