A local hair salon is in the running for two top prizes after making the shortlist at a national ceremony again.

Capaldi Hair has been nominated for both the ‘Best in Liverpool’ category and its owner, Sonya Capaldi, as ‘Best Stylist’ in the English Hair and Beauty Awards.

After already taking home the ‘Best in Liverpool’ prize last year with over 40,000 votes, she is keen to keep this title in the upcoming ceremony that will take place this March in Manchester.

Sonya proudly told JMU Journalism how her business has been thriving in the community after moving from a rented room in the city centre to Derby Lane in Old Swan.

She said: “I think we offer things that some other salons don’t. We don’t just do your normal hairdressing, we are exceptionally good at bridal [occasions] and I’ve travelled up and down the country to do it, from Scotland right down to London.

“Also, we do photoshoots as well and I like to do ‘avant-garde’, which are more extreme hairstyles. We just aren’t afraid to put ourselves out there, whether it be all different things such as competitions or awards.”

The 42-year-old from Prescot became the only female finalist in the UK in the Alternative Hair International Visionary Award in 2013 and was one of the few 25 hairstylists in the world to showcase her talent to over 5,000 people in London.

The salon has also won a string of title since opening in Liverpool in 2016 and has became a local favourite, as well as gaining many loyal clients willing to travel from Widnes, Manchester, Warrington and Chester.

Capaldi Hair won ‘Best Salon’ in the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards and ‘Fastest Growing Salon’ in the UK Fashion and Beauty Awards, both in 2014.

She said: “It would be fantastic to bring it home ‘The Best in Liverpool’ title again, not just for me but for the clients and the girls who work here because they also put a lot of effort in to work so they deserve it.

“As much as it’s a beautiful salon, it’s very family-friendly and everyone always says, as the reviews show, it just feels very welcome. We are not a pretentious salon, even though it’s pretty. We are all nice and down to earth and it feels homely.”

Capaldi Hair offers professional makeup and nail applications, as well as hair packages and plans are already in the talks to expand with an upstairs space to make room for more beauty and skincare treatments.
