Liverpudlian Christopher Maloney is still safe on X Factor after being voted back in by the public, amid suggestions that he has been the shock front-runner on the ITV talent show.

Despite not being a favourite among the judges, Maloney appears to be a hit with viewers as a number national newspapers reported this weekend that he topped the public vote in the first two live shows.

Maloney is said to have received far more votes than closest rivals Jahmene Douglas and Ella Henderson in the early rounds, suggesting that Liverpool – a city that has produced three previous runners-up on X Factor – is right behind its latest local hope.

On the judging panel, opinions are much more divided, and Maloney was once again grilled over his ‘cheesy’ performance.

After 34-year-old Maloney performed his version of Boy Meets Girl’s ‘Waiting For a Star to Fall’, Nicole Scherzinger said: “Who doesn’t love a warm cheese toastie? It’s hard to criticise you, because you’re so loveable and I see how much effort you put into it.”

Louis Walsh agreed with his American co-judge, saying: “Gary picked a good song for you. It’s cheesy and fun, and you hit every note.”

Tulisa was much more critical, telling Maloney: “You’re not going to like me for this, but I don’t get it. It’s too cheesy for me. This act isn’t fun for me anymore.”

Gary Barlow defended the Kirkdale singer, reminding him: “The people of Liverpool are behind you.”

Liverpool Mutual Homes worker Maloney told his critics: “I don’t think I’m cheesy. I’m working to make myself better and that’s what the show is all about.”

Maloney will perform in next week’s Halloween-themed episode of X Factor.
